Blues on the Rideau with HARRISON KENNEDY & BAND

To kick off this year’s Series – from The Hammer – arguably Canada’s best Soul/Blues/Roots male vocalist (and a damn fine songwriter too) – Harrison returns to The Cove for a fourth visit. Growing up in Hamilton the Kennedy house was always full of music thanks to his famous uncle – Jazzman Jackie Washington who would bring artists home like Lonnie Johnson, Duke Ellington and Billie Holiday when they were passing through.  Harrison began his career in the late ‘60’s when his dynamic vocal talent earned him a spot on the world famous Motown band “Chairmen Of The Board” who shared the stage with artists like B.B. King, James Brown, Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder and many more.

When the band broke up in the ‘70’s Harrison returned to Hamilton and took a “real job” as a factory foreman only playing music on the side for the next couple of decades. But his love of the Blues was too powerful and in 2000 he returned to music full time with his first album “Sweet Taste”. 7 more have followed including his most recent “Who U Tellin’?” 4 of them were nominated for Juno Awards and he won in 2015 for “This Is From Here”.

He’s also won 9 Hamilton Music Awards and received an astounding 38 Maple Blues Award nominations since 2005 in the categories of Male Vocalist, Acoustic Artist, Songwriter and Album Of The Year. Internationally he’s been nominated 8X for American Blues Music Awards and won the prestigious French Academie Charles Cros Award in the Blues category (other winners include Buddy Guy, Doctor John and Otis Taylor).

The past few years Harrison has hooked up with the great Eric Bibb and toured with him, Ruthie Foster and another Canadian talented Michael Jerome Browne wowing audiences everywhere especially in Europe where he has a huge following.

Fee: $70.

Canoe Building Classes with Ted Moores

Learn strip-plank/epoxy construction while building an elegant, enduring canoe with Ted Moores. Ted is an innovative boat builder, author, teacher and small craft historian. His books, CanoeCraft and KayakCraft, have led thousands of builders through the process of building their own craft and are considered definitive resources on canoe and kayak construction.

Students will work in small teams building one or two boats during this intensive seven-day course. By week’s end, the boats will be up to the final sanding and varnishing stage, ready for the details that will personalize them for their new owners. The canoes and kayaks constructed during a course are raffled on the last day to interested builders for the cost of the materials.

The pace allows students time to confidently develop new skills and enjoy the comfortable satisfaction of doing good work. Ted will set attainable, yet high standards of craftsmanship that will have you feeling tired but satisfied at the end of each day.

Workshops are kept small to allow for individual attention to specific needs. Subjects covered include sharpening and maintaining hand tools, steam bending, laminating and a variety of basic woodworking/boatbuilding tricks and techniques that will be valuable in many different applications.

PRESS RELEASE – For Immediate Release

BLUES ON THE RIDEAU @ THE COVE INN, WESTPORT RETURNS FOR ITS 15TH ANNIVERSARY SEASON SEPTEMBER 13th WITH AN AMAZING LINE-UP

Blues On The Rideau at The Cove Inn in Westport Ontario returns for its 15th Anniversary Season on September 13th with Juno Award winner HARRISON KENNEDY and his band from Hamilton kicking off what is arguably the best Line-Up ever for the Series. There will be one show per month from September through to May 2020.

This Dinner & Show Fundraiser Series has become one of the longest running and best-known  Blues Series in the country featuring some of Canada’s best Blues, Soul, R&B and Blues-Rock bands. Getting to see bands of this caliber in the friendly, intimate setting of a classic country inn in one of the most scenic villages in Ontario is a truly unique experience.

Proceeds from each show go to support different local charities/good causes. To date over $74,000 has been raised by BOTR with the goal of another $6K this season.

There are 12 BOTR shows for the 2019/20 including three 2 Night Stands. All shows take place from 7-11 pm and include a delicious full course buffet dinner, dancing and door prizes with a chance to win 2 Grand Prizes at the end of the season. The ticket price has gone up slightly for 2019/20 (the first increase in 5 years) – from $65 to $70 pp (plus HST) – but that still makes it one of the best entertainment values in the country!

Here’s the 2019/20 Line-Up:

  • April 17 – From Kingston MISS EMILY w. BAND One of the most dynamic Soul/Blues/Jazz/R&B singers to hit the Canadian scene in decades with a great 7 piece band including The Cove’s Seamus Cowan on bass!
  • May 8 – From Victoria, BC. DAVID VEST w. BAND – Alabama born and bred David plays Boogie-Woogie piano as good as it gets. Winner of the Maple Blues Award for Best Keyboard player 5 of the past 7 years! His 3rd visit to BOTR.

Westport is only a 1.5 hour drive from Ottawa, 45 minutes from Kingston, 2.5 hours from Syracuse and 3 hours from Toronto and Montreal. Google Map “The Cove Country Inn, Westport Ontario” to see how best to get there.

Full details on the Series including the artists’ Bios, links to their websites and YOU TUBE videos – plus the charities that are being supported can be found at www.BluesOnTheRideau.ca

Note that bands may change due to unforeseen circumstances so best to check the website or contact The Cove Inn to confirm as each show approaches.

ADVANCE RESERVATIONS are required for all shows and can be made at The Cove by phone

Tim Moxan at the Cove

Tim Moxam refuses to rest. A full-time Carpenter, his quietly dazzling folk-pop arrangements reflect the tireless patience, precision, and quality he brings to his work. And when his work day is done and he starts to sing, the only sensible thing to do is listen. Marlborough Hall, Moxam’s brilliant second full-length album, is the hotly anticipated follow-up to 2016’s Soft Summer, which yielded CBC radio chart-toppers ‘Meant to Be’ and ‘Harvest for the Queen’, while building on the 2013 global breakthrough track ‘Live in the Bedroom’.

Within its walls, we are introduced to a character whose hands are never still, which betray a restless mind that never settles; someone that seeks precision and quality with every pursuit; and who, above all else, demands nothing but the honest truth.
