Christmas at the Mill in Westport

4

The mill will be lit up with festive candles as part of Delta’s Celebrating the Season. We’ll be open from 5:00 to 8:30 pm.

Also be sure to visit our Christmas Gift Shop in the Old Town Hall.  Lower Beverley Lake Park will be lit with over 80,000 lights and there are free wagon rides from the village to the park.

Christmas Lights in the Mill: Each Christmas season the Delta Mill Society installs large lighted candles and wreaths in the Mill windows and people come from many miles around to see this beautiful seasonal display. As one local business person wrote to the Society “the Mill’s windows glow like small jewels on cold winter nights”. This display is now paired with Delta’s Celebrating the Season with thousands of lights in Lower Beverley Lake Park.

Admission is free (donations appreciated). For more information see www.deltamill.org

Westport – Remembrance Day Ceremony

3

Celebrate the Brave. Veterans Stay Overnight. Free. At 10:40 am, students and staffs at Westport stop to remember our fallen soldiers with a minutes silence.

About Remembrance Day

Remembrance Day marks the anniversary of the official end of the World War I hostilities on November 11, 1918. World War I was a massive conflict was played out over the whole globe, but particularly in Europe, where troops from Canada supported the Allied forces.

Some 100,000 Canadian soldiers died in the First and Second World Wars.

All government buildings fly the Canadian flag this day and people remember those who fought for Canada during a two minute silence at 10 :40 am. Many people wear poppies before and on Remembrance Day to show their respect and support for Canadian troops. Poppies are generally handed out free but often a voluntary donation is given in exchange.

In Canada, November 11 is officially called Remembrance Day, but it is also known as Armistice Day and Poppy Day. Remembrance Day is commemorated in many countries, particularly members of the Commonwealth, including Australia and New Zealand (where it is also referred to as Armistice Day). In the United States, Veterans Day falls on the same date. In the United Kingdom, the Sunday closest to November 11 is known as Remembrance Sunday. In Canada, November 11 is officially called Remembrance Day, but it is also known as Armistice Day and Poppy Day.

Spirits of the Mill

13

We will gather at the Old Town Hall in Delta at 7:00 pm and take a walk to the Old Stone Mill where we will meet some very interesting people from the past. Then we’ll return to the Old Town Hall for a presentation on “Pioneer Funeral Foods” by Joyce Gunnewiek and end the evening with refreshments. Cost for the evening is $5.00 per person. “Not for the faint of heart”

The Old Stone Mill at Delta was built in 1810 by William Jones and Ira Schofield and is one of the earliest surviving, fully automatic, grist mills of Upper Canada. In 1817 the mill was described as “unquestionably the best building of the kind in Upper Canada”.

The prime artifact of the Delta Mill Society is the Mill itself, an imposing Georgian-style stone structure of four stories, 40 by 60 feet (12m x 18m). This National Historic Site is a proud reminder of the industrial heritage of Eastern Ontario. In 2005 the newly renovated mill was enhanced with beautiful interpretive signboards and displays, in 2007 a water-wheel was installed and in 2010, working millstones and a bolter were put in place. A feature exhibit, Down by the Old Millstream, Celebrating Life on the Beverley Lakes can be found on the third floor of the mill. An illustrated self-guided tour allows the visitor to easily browse all these exhibits.

When you first enter the mill, you’ll see and hear the rushing water that first powered a water wheel and later a turbine to operate the various machinery of the mill. Much of this machinery is on display, starting with equipment such as millstones used the early 1800s era and moving up to machinery used in the early 1900s.

The displays and the stunning architecture of the mill itself make a visit to the mill an unforgettable experience.

Thanksgiving day in Canada

12

Thanksgiving day in Canada is on October 10, 2016.

Thanksgiving Day in Canada has been a holiday on the second Monday of October since 1957. It is a chance for people to give thanks for a good harvest and other fortunes in the past year.

Many people have a day off work on the second Monday of October. They often use the three-day Thanksgiving weekend to visit family or friends who live far away, or to receive them in their own homes.

Many people also prepare a special meal to eat at some point during the long weekend. Traditionally, this included roast turkey and seasonal produce, such as pumpkin, corn ears and pecan nuts. Now, the meal may consist of other foods, particularly if the family is of non-European descent.
The native peoples of the Americas held ceremonies and festivals to celebrate the completion and bounty of the harvest long before European explorers and settlers arrived in what is now Canada. Early European thanksgivings were held to give thanks for some special fortune. An early example is the ceremony the explorer Martin Frobisher held in 1578 after he had survived the long journey in his quest to find a northern passage from Europe to Asia.

From the end of the First World War until 1930, both Armistice Day and Thanksgiving Day were celebrated on the Monday closest to November 11, the anniversary of the official end of hostilities in World War I. In 1931, Armistice Day was renamed Remembrance Day and Thanksgiving Day was moved to a Monday in October. Since 1957, Thanksgiving Day has always been held on the second Monday in October.

Thanksgiving Day in Canada is linked to the European tradition of harvest festivals. A common image seen at this time of year is a cornucopia, or horn, filled with seasonal fruit and vegetables. The cornucopia, which means “Horn of Plenty” in Latin, was a symbol of bounty and plenty in ancient Greece. Turkeys, pumpkins, ears of corn and large displays of food are also used to symbolize Thanksgiving Day. Other popular activities include outdoor breaks to admire the spectacular colors of the Canadian autumn, hiking, and fishing.

Pigs and Pie Fall Fly-in

11

October 08, Westport ON (CRL2): COPA Flight 56 Annual “Pigs and Pies” Fly-In / Drive-In lunch hosted by the Rideau Lakes Flying Club.

This is our fall large-scale fly-in event. View the planes and enjoy the Westport hospitality. Planes come from all over Ontario, Quebec, and the Northeast States to the Westport Aerodrome. On the May 21 long weekend we held the Spring version and had 52 planes arrive – very exciting.

It’s a great way to really experience the joy of flight. People can come to the field and see a wide variety of planes arrive and takeoff. Lots of time to walk the flightline, see the planes and talk with the pilots.

We also will be providing our famous “Pigs” (i.e. Kudrinko’s fabulous sausages) plus local “Pies” made fresh just down the road – a wonderful scrumptious combination. Sausages and pie served from 11:00 until 14:00 (donations accepted to cover costs). Floatplane pickup from main dock in Westport. Fun for the whole family.

All to be had for a donation to the Club. Again, everyone in the community is welcome.

Cook together in the community kitchen on the first Tuesday of every month! Learn new skills, take home food. Childcare is available.  What’s Cooking is a Community Kitchen in Westport, ON. We get together once a month to cook nutritious, delicious meals.

Join us to try new foods and recipes, share a meal, bring extras home, have a good time, and meet new people in your community. We pick the recipes together, focusing on local, seasonal, budget-friendly ingredients. Some months we have a specific cultural theme, a guest speaker from the community, or a special event.

The group is facilitated by Registered Dietitian, Kate Earl, from Country Roads Community Health Centre. We discuss different nutrition and food safety topics each month and members share healthy eating tips with each other.

The program is FREE. There is no cost to participate. We also offer free childcare. Please ask us if you need help with travel costs. All we ask from you is that you participate in the cooking (and clean up!), come ready to have fun, and be open to trying new foods.
