BLUES ON THE RIDEAU @ THE COVE ends the season with a bang May 12 with the TERRY GILLESPIE BAND

The BLUES ON THE RIDEAU Dinner & Show Fundraiser Series @ THE COVE INN, Westport Ontario ended the 2016/17 Season in style Friday May 12th with Vankleek Hill’s own TERRY GILLESPIE and his band delivering a great show – Terry on vocals, guitar and harmonica, Andrew Cowan on guitar, Chris Breitner on bass and Wayne Stoute on drums. Blues, Soul, Funk, Reggae – we got it all including lots of songs from his brand new CD “Home Boy”. Cove Manager Seamus Cowan joined them on stage to play some bass for a few songs in the last set as did surprise BOTR regular Jeffrey McKay on harmonica. This was one of the first stops on Terry’s NEW “Home Boy” CD LAUNCH TOUR – they head off to the GTA for more shows this week so Toronto Blues fans take note – get out and see these guys when they’re in your neck of the woods – truly one of the most unique Blues artists on the scene today – they will put you “in the groove” – guaranteed! (Upcoming dates and venues are on Terry’s website).

The Cove served up another fabulous buffet dinner featuring roast beef brisket, cajun catfish and butter chicken with all the usual excellent veggies, salads and dessert.

$330 was raised for 4-H Ontario, Leeds Chapter bringing this year’s donation total to just under $4K – almost $64K has now been raised for local Westport charities since the BOTR @ The Cove Series started 12 years ago.

Lots of great Door Prizes were given out as always – several CD’s (including two copies of “Home Boy”), Kingston Blues Society and Ottawa Blues Society memberships, Jacob’s Creek Wine, The Cove Inn and Choose The Blues t-shirts and more.

Since it was the last show of the season we also had the big end-of-season PRIZE DRAW – two Comment Cards were pulled from all of the cards submitted over the year – and the WINNERS are:

1st PRIZE – 2 Night Getaway (bed & breakfast) at The Cove – Gordon Flagler, Orangeville/Gananoque. He was there that night to receive the prize!
2nd PRIZE – Dinner & Show for 2 at one of next season’s BOTR shows – MaryAnn Schryer from Ottawa (she attended GODBOOGIE’S show in April)

Here’s what some of the attendees had to say about Friday’s show on their COMMENT CARDS:

“Great service. Fabulous music. Marvellous sound”
Ed Stephen, Brockville (Has attended many BOTR nights in the past)

“A fabulous place for a nice dinner on the Rideau. Great people and exceptional music. The perfect spot for a Getaway Weekend”
Suzanne Charest, Ottawa (First time attending a BOTR night)

“We always look forward to our nights at BOTR @ The Cove. They never disappoint! Thank you. 10 out of 10 for everything – venue, food, service, sound and band. Ellie Lambert, Kingston (Has attended 5 previous BOTR nights)

“I’ve been to The Cove many times and it’s always filled with great people, great music and lots of good times. The family atmosphere here is fun and enjoyable” Cathy Hay, Perth (Has attened 2 previous BOTR nights)

A big end of season THANK YOU goes out to our Sponsors for their help and support with this year’s Series – we couldn’t do it without them – JACOB’S CREEK WINES, PERTH BREWERY, DAWG FM Ottawa, LAKE 88 Perth, OTTAWA BLUES SOCIETY and KINGSTON BLUES SOCIETY.

Also the local and regional media especially The Westport Review-Mirror, EMC Metroland Smiths Falls & Perth, The Humm, Explore Westport, Village of Westport Chamber of Commerce, DAWG FM Ottawa, LAKE 88 Perth and CBC Ottawa All In A Day.

Safe Kids Week in Westport

May 30 to June 5 – 2017 is the 21st Anniversary for Parachute’s Safe Kids Week Many Canadians are surprised to learn that preventable injuries kill more children every year than any other disease.

Parachute Safe Kids Week is a national awareness campaign developed to bring attention to predictable and preventable injuries in children. Taking place June 5 – 11, 2017 this year is focused on promoting safe and active transportation: Walk, Bike, Wheel, which includes walking, cycling, skateboarding, scootering and other wheeled activities.

This year’s theme is everyday superhero, which encourages children to become leaders in road safety by learning how to stay active and keep themselves and their loved ones safe on their travels to and from school, to the bus stop, and around their neighbourhood. Parents can guide their child’s activities by modelling safe behaviour and practices on the road, and also being aware of their child’s skill level.

There are a few easy steps we can all take to keep children, and ourselves safe. Start by taking part. Communities across Canada are participating in Parachute Safe Kids Week.

The good news is that prevention efforts are working – since 1996, Canada has enjoyed a decreasing trend in death and hospitalizations from preventable injuries overall. But there is a still lot of work to do to keep children, and ourselves safe.Plan to take part in Parachute’s Safe Kids Week, happening May 30 – June 5, 2016 with a focus on the top injury issues that affect children on the road, at home and at play.

Graven and Ben Mullin at the Cove Inn!

(Jaybird)… promises to continue Graven’s lyrical flair with songs like “Big Lake, Sky Summer”, “In the Woods of Me” and “Lone”. Here, McKechnie walks the ridges of an alt-country landscape planting seeds of folk-rock along the way. What sprouts up are songs he calls his “thickest”, “crunchiest” and “folk-rocky-est” to date.”
Andre Gagne (Ottawa Life Magazine)

The alt-folk, spacey, backwoods rock rail rider Graven and his guitar guru/voice Venus Ben Mullin are set to stage an interstellar night of sonic delight in the beautiful, field-jewel town of Westport on Friday May 26.

Graven is the alt-country folk-rock mindscape of Matt McKechnie. His new album features percussion from JUNO winner Joel Plaskett’s drummer Dave Marsh.

Happy Mother’s Day 2017!

Mother’s Day is a celebration honoring the mother of the family, as well as motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society. It is celebrated on various days in many parts of the world, most commonly in the months of March or May.

Early Mother’s Day celebrations can be dated back to the spring celebrations to honor Rhea, the Mother of the Gods, in ancient Greek civilization, according to some sources. Later, Mothering Sunday in the United Kingdom was traditionally a day for people to visit the church where they were baptized, although it now also celebrates motherhood in modern times.

Early celebrations of Mother’s Day originated from Canada’s neighboring country, the United States. Carnations are a popular Mother’s Day symbol in both Canada and the United States. Some people may choose to wear a carnation as a brooch on Mother’s Day. However, other flowers are also given to mothers or mother figures to symbolize one’s love and appreciation for them.

What do people do on Mother’s day?
Many people remember their mothers and mother figures on Mother’s Day.
Some people give cards, flowers, or chocolates, and/or make handmade items or special meals on Mother’s Day. Others take their mothers or mother figures to the movies, a restaurant, café, or a day in a park. Some mothers and mother figures also receive special gifts such as jewelry, clothing, accessories, and gift vouchers for services or products.

Mother’s Day falls on different days depending on the countries where it is celebrated. It is held on the second Sunday of May in many countries, such as Australia, Canada and the United States. It is held exactly three weeks before Easter Sunday in the United Kingdom. Sundays are usually non-school and non-working days in these countries.
