    Hello Westport!

I’ve been driving about an hour and half every Saturday for the last couple of months to take in my favourite activity in the Westport area: Nia! This is a one hour exercise class that moves me, body, mind and soul. I know it seems like a long way to go to exercise, but it’s worth it. You have to experience it to know how wonderful it is, and then feel the joy of being with others who feel the same way. Saturday’s class is in Bolingbroke at the ABC Community Hall at 9 am. Now, you lucky people are getting a second class, and I’m planning to go to it too. It’s at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesdays at the Lyon’s Club Beach Hall. Wish I had a cottage up there!!:) Anyhow, it’s really worth it to me, and the instructor is lovely. It’s a beautiful drive, and I enjoy going to the farmer’s market in Westport afterwards. Last weekend was particularly nice. I brought home a lovely copper wire/marble sculpture that is twirling in the wind here, as well as a dozen of the heaviest eggs I’ve ever bought! That’s because they are farm fresh from happy, healthy chickens! Summer. Sweetness. Nia and all things natural and organic go hand in hand.

We love to go into Westport from Loon Lake (where we stay each summer for several days) for some ice cream, walk shop-to-shop, sit by the water and have a date without the kids! We always take home something tasty from the little Swiss bakery. Westport is one of our favorite little towns in the world!

  • August 5th, 2010, 10:34 pm

Our favourite thing to do is to browse the shops, our favourite being the Rock shop where my daughter (6) is fascinated and the owner indulges her with all the info on the rocks, we then like to relax at the Cove – although one time was not so relaxing – we ate out on the patio and a summer storm came on suddenly throwing rain on us mid starters, just as we went indoors a gust of wind blew the parasols down the street. What an adventure! We loved it and my daughter always talks about it when we go back there – I think she kind of wishes we could have the drama over again.

I was just visiting a friend up at Bob’s Lake this past weekend…she took me into Westport to pick up supplies…I fell in love with the place! As fate would have it, I also was looking around for a new home, and am going to see one up there this weekend. This website is going to be very useful to me! I am a firm believer in destiny…the beauty Westport has to offer is second to none, and I have been around the world. Keeping my fingers crossed re the viewing!!

My personal favourite part of the extravagant town of Westport is easily the delectable taste of cedar bride fudge and jelly belly jellybeans. Time after time it astounds me with incredible flavour. Although the next favourite things has been closed down I would like to make and hounourable mention to the Tip Top Dollar Shop and The Sandman for entertaining me throughout my youth.

I thoroughly enjoy having people new to Westport over so that I can bring them to shop and see the amazing wide variety of shops. Each one has a different personality and ambiance that is enchanting to new comers as well as local shoppers; and let’s face it whether you’re from Westport or just visiting when someone suggests going out to eat, The Cove is it. We really have it all in Westport, water, nature, shopping, activities wide open fresh air spaces and how many of us actually take time each day to appreciate these things. If you haven’t given a prayer of thanks lately right now isn’t too late.

One of my favourite things to do is 1) Get up early and go out for breakfast with my sister. We usually go to the Station Diner or the Country Kitchen. 2) Go out on the boat with my brother and his family on Sand Lake 3) Grab a coffee with my mom (Vanilla Bean) 4) Eating lunch somewhere different like at Narrow’s Locks with my other sister.

I also like running into someone you know…this rarely happens to me now that I live in the city, but in Westport you are sure to see an old friend, or just someone really friendly!

  • July 29th, 2010, 10:42 am

Haven’t been many times this summer but I always enjoy hitting Jazz Night at the Cove on Thursdays. Seamus and Jeff keep the rhythm while Spencer plays topless clarinet. And how can you possibly not find topless clarinet entertaining?

My favorite thing to do is to take my guests to town after going to spy rock and watching the huge fish off the bridge of the fish sanctuary pond then browse through the many fun and fascinating shops to find the incredible thing you can’t go home without. Then a nice cold beverage in the OLD bar part of the cove… and then maybe lunch brunch or dinner on the patio where you are always fussed over as a long lost pal the owners or staff are HAPPY to see. My guests go away with a warm fuzzy feeling of small town hospitality

    . THANK’S

  • July 28th, 2010, 10:25 am

My favourite part about living in Westport is that when you head down the street to go grocery shopping or get the mail, you are greeted by almost everyone. Being such a small community, you know almost everyone. I love it!

  • July 27th, 2010, 10:19 pm

I love going to the spring to pump fresh water! Can you still fill up your own jugs there? I like to go for an ice cream cone after meandering through the village and shopping at the little boutiques. When I was little, there used to be a five and dime store on the corner across from the Tweedsmuir. The population sign for the village used to say 300. My! how Westport has transformed!

Haven’t been up for years but in need of a reason to go again. Favorite thing to do when I was younger was jump off the bridge in town. Thing we continued until we stopped going in 2006 was Wednesday nights going to Steve’s for pizza, following that up with Bingo, and ending the night off with a bit of Karaoke. I love the town of Westport, favorite place to shop is Village Green.

  • July 27th, 2010, 2:38 pm

To me, Westport is always most dear to my heart and ‘home’….the best people that one can know have some link to the traditions and history of the ‘village’ — my wife loves when we just take off for “home”; we both feel a great sigh of relief when we come over the mountain to the peace below. The village reminds me Coronation Street, Trailor Park Boys, and Faulty Towers all rolled into one — because of the fun times you have with the people. If you are ever in trouble, the whole community will be there for you!– Many of the local legends have died off but the mention of their names is sure to bring on a big smile and a laugh or two. Don’t ever have a plugged toilet during hunting season — every man is gone! I am sure that there is even competition to see who becomes the new village idiot every year. The Bundy Bash makes every one a born-again redneck; (even the Boaters from Quebec fit in during July) — Local politics seem to flourish just like they did in the 1950’s to the great relief of everyone. Rick Mercer should be invited to do a live show from the Westport Arena…his rants would seem right at home with the locals.

The highlight of any visit to Westport for me would be dining outside at the Cove with friends and/or family. Before or after shopping or not shopping at all, without or without a visit to the coffee shop or ice cream store.

  • July 27th, 2010, 10:39 am

I like to shop shop shop. love the village green, then have a nice cesar salad at the Cove and view the beautiful serene setting there. it is my favorite place in westport. you are very lucky to have that place in your life. I used to go there to listen to good old country music 30 years ago.. you have certainly upscaled the establishment for the better. But it was fun for sure and it still is… best regards to all in westport…

Westport means so much to me. As a ten year old girl, it meant visiting my dear Grand-Pa Bob Copp on week-ends, and jumping off the bridge at the marina in the summer. As a teen-ager, it meant perfect summer afternoons on the beach with my Dad Barry, and having the best cheeseburger and chocolate milkshake at the restaurant across from the beer store.
As an adult who still sometimes day-dreams of moving here from Ottawa, Westport still means fun visits with family and friends, lazy days at the lake, and rainy-day visits to the lovely stores filled with treasures and excellent customer service.
And nothing beats getting a box of fried clams and fries from the Salmon House and eating them on a bench at the marina, while watching families enjoying their boats, the breath-taking view of the gorgeous surroundings, and breathing the clean, non-city air.
I love Wesport. Always have, always will.

  • July 27th, 2010, 10:37 am

Oddly enough my all time favorite thing to do in Westport since I was a child was going to the Esso (hoping it still exists) and getting a PopShoppe soda and an Ice cream cone…. Yummmmmmmmmmmmmmy

I have been coming to the Westport area for 43 years (I am 42, but 1st came up when I was 6 mos. old)There are so many favorite rituals to do in Westport both summer & winter. I would say taking our boat up from Clear lake thru the locks, docking at the Marina then jumping off the bridge (back when I was a kid, since it is illegal now)Stopping at one of the many great restuarants, going to Murphs for a song & some fishing lures (I really miss that man), hitting the bakery’s to get fresh goods, & asking for the 1 or 2 day leftovers for the fish at the sanctuary. I could write an entire novel of things to do in Westport, but I will just leave the ones I have written above.

  • July 27th, 2010, 9:39 am

I have been coming up to Tichborne for many of years and had never ventured out to Westport until last year. My friend told me about it so I had to check it out. Well the kids and I fell in love with it, and we are looking forward to visiting again. We will be in Canada the week of 8/1/2010 thru 8/7/2010 and we are definately going to make one of those days a “Westport” day. We love the shops and the ice cream cones last year were to “die for”, Yummy!! We will be traveling from Red Creek NY. We are actually located about 5 minutes from Lake Ontario near Fair Haven. Can’t wait to get there!!

I grew up in Westport and it’s such a magical place that it’s no wonder I’ve returned to raise my family there. Both of my sons have also said they want to live in Westport when are older. Some of my favourite things include boating on the Rideau, Blues nights at the Cove and watching minor hockey at the arena. I also love wandering around the shops. My husband teases me that it takes me 3 times longer to shop in Westport than anywhere else because I have to stop and chat and visit with EVERYONE. The friendliness of the people is another one of my favourite things!!!

I love to walk around West Port and look in all the beautiful shops especially my favorite is Village Green, then to go down to the water and listen to the beautiful nature sounds. I have also stayed in the Cove and it was also very beautiful. It’s very relaxing and peaceful. My husband and I rented a canoe there and he surprised me with a ring in the middle of the lake.

I have been going to Bob’s Lake outside of Westport for 45 years. My family started going there when I was two years old and we are all grown now and have families of our own and all still enjoy the Westport/Bob’s Lake area. I enjoy the quaintness of the small town of Westport and all it has to offer. The great shops with so many unique things, the friendliness of the people and the great food and atmosophere at the Cove. We absolutely love Westport and the people; it is our home away from home.

One favourite thing to do? I can’t think of one favourite thing to do. I love spending time at the Lions’ Beach, wandering the streets and shops sharing pleasantries with all, taking a trail at Foley Mountain Conservation Area, grabbing an ice cream at Cedar Bridge and feeding the fish at the sanctuary, playing baseball or simply throwing the ball around at the baseball diamond, grabbing a pizza at The Rusic Oven and checking out all of the boats at the harbour and on Saturday’s I test my taste buds at the Farmer’s Market with fresh muffins, fruits and vegetables. There’s so many events that also take place, so there’s never a dull moment unless that’s what you’re looking for by the water to watch the boats go by and the birds of many species live their lives, although I wouldn’t call that dull, but relaxing and peaceful. I love Westport, the people and all there is to do.

Westport holds a lot of memories for me. We were introduced to Westport when our sister bought one of the condos way back, when they were first built. We would often travel from Montreal for a relaxing weekend. For years we would spend one or two weeks a summer with our dad at Scott’s Cottages, fishing and golfing on the awesome courses that Westport has to offer. We would eat at Steve’s and The Cove patio and even return in the evening to play pool. We have since lost our dad, but the memories are still there. And we are fortunate enough to have friends who are up there now and we continue to return to the area and enjoy the many shops and the spectacular views and the lovely people.

  • July 27th, 2010, 8:16 am

My favourite thing to do in Westport is to take a couple of hours and wander through all the wonderful shops. When I’m shopped out, I buy an ice cream cone, then wander down to the harbour to look at all the boats that are docked and enjoy the lovely views of the lake and Foley Mountain.

Westport has been my vacation home for … well forever. We had a trailer at Canoe Lake and then in 1975 my parents bought land and built a cottage on Devil Lake. Sitting on the deck and watching the loons. Perfect!
Of course you wait with anticipation for the visit to all the shops in Westport wondering what new gems are going to be open and what treasures you are going to find at the Village Green. I now take my grandsons there so they can choose something from Grandma for the holiday.
Last week as we were renovating the bathroom we discovered we needed a new sink (not in the plan) and found the perfect fit in Home Hardward in Westport including all the fittings. Thank goodness we didn’t need the trip to the big city. Bought and installed and water back on in one day… at a reasonable cost!
Love Westport no matter what season! and looking forward to many many more.

I usually go to Westport when I’m visiting my sister who lives in the Rideau Lakes area. I love this area because it is a chance to relax and enjoy the tranquility of nature. My favourite thing to do in Westport is to visit the library and look for books in its second-hand bookshop in the basement. It’s like finding buried treasure when I discover a fascinating book on art, crafts, gardening or Canadian history. And the librarian is so friendly and nice.

Longtime visitor of Westport, My favorite place on earth. When i come to Westport, the water is so peaceful compared to where i come from. I am 47 Years old and have been vacationing in Westport my entire life. A perfect day in Westport begins with something lucious from the Church Street Bakery (Now on Main Street), followed up with a bag of Cheese Curds from Forfar dairy and a Stewarts Key Lime Soda (usually bought at the Esso Station). After walking through town with my lovely wife and children, we head back out to Crosby Lake and relax all afternoon. When evening rolls around, I love to travel to Smiths Falls and get a Sausage pizza from Pizza Pizza, which is my favorite Pizza in the whole wide world. On the way back through town, we stop at Bennett’s old corner store for a wonderful ice cream cone. then it is back to the lake for a peaceful night.

Westport holds a special place in my heart as my husband proposed to me while we were visiting/shopping there 3 yrs. ago this september. We had lunch and took a walk down by the water and while we were sitting in the gazebo, he got down on bended knee and asked me to be his wife. We went back and stayed at the Cove one night of our honeymoon and every year we make a trip back to the place where our life as man and wife began.

My family began vacationing @ Wolfe Lake Cottages in 1984. We went every year except one while I was a kid. That year we went to Disney World and I was not happy. I would have much rather been in Westport. My favorite memory as a kid was getting an ice cream cone at the store that used to be across the street from the grocery store and then walking over to the fish sanctuary and feeding the fish the remnants of my cone. The last year that I was to Westport was 1995. My father still vacationed there and a few years ago I was fortunate enough to vacation with my wife and kids and watch them do the same things that I did as a kid. Unfortunately, to my knowledge, Wolfe Lake Cottages have been sold and are not longer being rented out. I would be interested in any other cottages in the area if anyone knows of any.

I’ve visited Westport every summer for the past 25 years (I’m 25 years old), and my favorite thing to do is to visit the Church Street Bakery, Westport Bakery, and Kudrinko’s all in the same day, so that my family can have our annual butter tart and date square taste-test. No one can ever agree on a favorite, so we end up buying a LOT of baked goods!
